THE DIASPORA COLLECTIVE’S STUDENTS CRAFT 6TH ANNUAL AFRICAN

HERITAGE CELEBRATION PRODUCTION FOR

 THEIR COMMUNITY!

J. Clarke Richardson’s Diaspora Collective, presents “The Nappy Routes: A Hair Peace”

~ An African Heritage Month Celebration.

“Committing yourself is a way of finding out who you are” ~ Robert Terwilliger

The Diaspora Collective is a character building program focused on critical thinking, communication and positive expression through the arts.  Formerly known as the Black History Group, The Diaspora Collective was officially founded September 2006 at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate Institute.  The tenants of the group are Respect, Unity, Empowerment Knowledge and Positive Progression.  The Collective’s productions are crafted with the intent to initiate discussion on issues that impact our community and society, serving as part of the antidote to disperse the negative images of youth in our community.

The event will be held inside J. Clarke Richardson’s theatre located at 1355 Harwood Avenue North, Ajax.  This year’s production was inspired by group discussions about identity, and research about Africville-one of Canada’s historic black communities, which was bulldozed in the 1970’s.  Through research, discussion, and interactive workshops, The Collective has created an original stage production which not only showcases incredibly diverse talents; it provides a vehicle to facilitate discussion and change.

Community Production dates: Friday February 26th, Saturday February 27th at 6:30 and Sunday February 28th at 4pm.
